Got electricity? Keep your kids safe!
Electricity is a wonderful thing, no question. But it can be dangerous, especially because we tend to take it for granted. If you have kids, it's smart to make your house as kid-safe as possible and make sure you teach them how to use it properly. Here are some tips:
Install child-proof electrical receptacles, or use plug covers on all electrical outlets
Install GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) receptacles on all electrical outlets near water or where kids may be playing with water or may be wet
Make sure your home and all electrical appliances are grounded
Don’t use electrical cords that are frayed or have exposed wiring, and avoid extension cords when at all possible
Teach kids not to play with electronics and appliances around water
Don’t overload your electrical outlets and circuits, as this can cause fires
Teach your children to ask for help when using electrical appliances, or unplugging lamps and other cords
Make sure your kids know not to put metal object in or around electrical appliances and outlets
Teach children to stay away from power lines, transformers (even the little ones in your yard) and substations
Always teach your kids about the dangers of electricity and how to properly act around it
And, of course, if you ever have any questions about anything in your house that may be dangerous, it's always a good idea to call in your local electrician to make sure everything is safe! Feel free to call us at 972.562.7724 to schedule a home safety check.
